Terms of Use

CleanLabel is an educational tool. You scan a barcode, and we show you the ingredient list along with plain-language explanations of ingredients that some research has raised questions about.

Our explanations are written and reviewed by Jason Moore, a functional nutritionist, and reflect his professional reading of the available evidence.

What CleanLabel is not

This matters enough to state plainly.

CleanLabel does not diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. It is not a medical device. It doesn't know your health history, your allergies, your medications, or your doctor's advice — and it isn't designed to.

Nutrition research changes, and reasonable experts disagree. An ingredient flagged in our app is not necessarily unsafe for you, and an ingredient we don't flag is not necessarily fine for you. These are general observations, not personal guidance.

If you have a health condition, an allergy, a pregnancy, or you're making decisions about food for medical reasons, talk to a qualified healthcare provider. Don't rely on this app instead.

About ingredient and product information

Product data comes from Open Food Facts and Chomp, which are public food databases maintained largely by contributors and industry submissions.

This means:

• A product's ingredient list may be outdated if the manufacturer reformulated it

• Some products aren't in the databases at all

• Occasionally information is simply wrong

The physical label on the package is always the authority. If our app and the package disagree, believe the package. This is especially important if you have a food allergy — never rely on CleanLabel to tell you whether something is safe for an allergy.

If you spot bad information, tell us at hello@cleanlabelapp.com and we'll look into it.

Your account

You need an account to keep using CleanLabel after your free scans. You're responsible for keeping your login details private and for what happens under your account.

You must be at least 18 to buy a subscription. If you're between 13 and 18, a parent or guardian needs to handle the purchase.

You can delete your account any time from the Profile tab.

Free scans and subscriptions

Free scans. New users get 10 scans at no cost, no payment details required.

Subscription. After that, continuing to scan requires a subscription: $4.99 per month or $44 per year. Prices are in U.S. dollars and may vary by country.

How billing works. Subscriptions are sold and billed through the App Store or Google Play. Your subscription renews automatically at the end of each period and your account is charged within 24 hours of renewal, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before the period ends.

How to cancel. You can cancel in your Apple or Google account settings at any time.

You can also cancel as part of deleting your CleanLabel account. On Android, deleting your account cancels your subscription automatically. On iPhone or iPad, Apple requires that you confirm the cancellation yourself, so we open Apple's cancellation screen inside the app and complete the deletion once it's done. We will not delete your account while leaving a subscription active without telling you plainly.

Refunds. Refunds are handled by Apple and Google under their own policies. We don't have the ability to issue them, though we're happy to help you make the request.

Price changes. If we change prices, existing subscribers are notified in advance and can cancel before the new price applies.

Using the app reasonably

Please don't:

• Scrape, copy, or redistribute our ingredient database

• Reverse-engineer the app or try to break into our systems

• Use CleanLabel to build a competing product

• Share one account among many people

• Present our ingredient explanations as your own, or as medical advice to others

We may suspend accounts that do these things.

Who owns what

CleanLabel's name, logo, design, and ingredient explanations belong to CleanLabel LLC. You're welcome to use the app and reference what you learn from it personally. You're not permitted to republish our content commercially without permission.

Product data from Open Food Facts is licensed under the Open Database License and belongs to its contributors.

The app is provided as-is

We work hard to make CleanLabel accurate and reliable, but we provide it "as is." We don't promise it will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that every product will be in the database.

To the fullest extent the law allows, CleanLabel LLC isn't liable for indirect or consequential damages arising from your use of the app. If we are found liable for something, our total liability is limited to what you paid us in the previous 12 months.

Some states don't allow certain limitations, so parts of this may not apply to you.

Ending things

You can stop using CleanLabel any time by deleting your account. We may suspend or close accounts that violate these terms, and we'll tell you why if we do.

If we ever shut the service down, we'll give you reasonable notice and a chance to cancel any active subscription.

Changes to these terms

We'll post updates here with a new date. If a change materially affects your rights, we'll notify you in the app before it takes effect. Continuing to use CleanLabel after that means you accept the change.

Legal details

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Gwinnett County, Georgia.

If any part of these terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in effect.
