FAQ Section

What does CleanLabel actually do?

Use your phone's camera to scan the barcode on a food package. CleanLabel reads the ingredient list, explains each ingredient in plain English, and marks the ones worth paying attention to. No nutrition degree required.

What if a product doesn't come up?

It happens — usually with brand-new products, small regional brands, or an item that hasn't made it into the database yet. Email us at hello@cleanlabelapp.com with the product name and we'll look into getting it added.

You can also use the search bar to lookup ingredients that you aren't sure about.

Who writes the ingredient explanations?

Jason Moore, a functional nutritionist and CleanLabel's co-founder. He researches every ingredient, writes the explanation in plain language, and assigns the color rating himself.

Is any of this written by AI?

No. Not a word of what you read in the app is generated by a chatbot. We use software to help organize research behind the scenes, but nothing reaches your screen until Jason has written it and approved it. We built the app this way on purpose — your health information should come from a person who is accountable for it.

Does a red flag mean the food is dangerous?

No. A red flag means one ingredient in that product has a documented concern worth knowing about. How much it matters depends on how much you eat, how often, and what else is in your diet. CleanLabel gives you the information — you decide what to do with it.

Can I use CleanLabel to check for allergens?

Please don't rely on it for that. Manufacturers reformulate products without changing the packaging, and ingredient databases can lag behind. If you have a food allergy, read the physical label every single time. That's the only source guaranteed to be current.

Do food companies pay you to rate their products favorably?

No. Brands cannot pay for a better rating, cannot pay to be featured, and cannot pay to have a flag removed. No brand has ever paid us anything. Your subscription is the only money coming in, which is exactly why it works this way.

What does it cost, and why isn't it free?

Your first 10 scans are free — enough to try it on a real grocery run. After that it's $4.99 a month or $44 a year. Free apps make their money somewhere, and in this category that usually means advertising, brand partnerships, or selling what they learn about you. We didn't want any of those pointed at you while you're standing in an aisle trying to make a decision.
